Boat Checklists for Charters & Deliveries
Legal and Administrative details; I need:
- A copy of the delivery agreement between Scott Ladd Mills and You, the owner.
- A copy of the owner’s insurance page listing me, Scott Ladd Mills as a "hired captain in the service of the vessel with Jones Act coverage".
Please check:
- Has the insurance area of coverage been extended to cover the planned transit areas for this voyage?
- Vessel flares – within date?
- PFD’s – enough and in good shape. Type IV throwable.
- Fire Extinguishers – up to date. Fixed systems – last checked?
- Documentation or Registration papers on board.
- Drug consortium card. (Yes, I carry one)
- Crew / mate listed on insurance and in drug consortium.
- Credit card or cash for in-transit expenses.
- Transportation ticket for captain's return home.
Operational Issues; I recommend that a check be made of the following (and a recent survey helps with these):
- Thru hulls operational
- Stuffing boxes adjusted
- Impellers changed recently
- All fluids changed and checked
- All filters changed with spares on board
- Sail inventory (with age of primary sails)
- Sheets, winches and standing rigging
- Spare fuel filters
- Spare oil for engine and transmission
- Spare belts
- Battery age and condition (3.5 years max.)
- Bilge pumps and float switches
- Manual pump on board
- Rudder, tiller, wheel (check for play)
- Cable or bolt cutters
- Tools, Tools, Tools
Electronics and Navigation:
- Navigation electronics, list w/ age
- Spare fuses for instruments in marked zip lock baggies
- Is compass corrected? When?
- Water proof charts
- Binoculars (I carry a pair, but good to have back-up)
- Pencils and plotting tools
- Flashlights, one with red lens filter
- Spare batteries, all sizes applicable, rechargeable
- EPIRB (at least one)
- Parachute sea anchor and drogue (more for offshore)
- Emergency life raft (inspected)
