FAQ's | Frequently Asked Questions

How many hours are made underway each day?

With a Captain and crew of two or more, weather permitting, we can sometimes make progress all night.
With Captain and one crew member, we generally log 10 to 12 hours per day. We are underway at sunrise and stop just before sunset.

What route will be taken?

Simply put, the safest and the fastest (unless you prefer another, personally desired, route).

Are you in contact with me, the boat owner, during the delivery?

Yes, cell phone reception permitting.

Do you provide a trip log ?

Yes. A trip log is provided detailing the day’s distance covered, location, and any notable situations.

What happens if repairs are needed along the way?

We will make repairs if we can. Otherwise we will get to the nearest marina and contact you immediately before any repairs are begun.

Does the boat need to be insured?

Yes, per the 'Jones Act' (probably best explained by your insurance agent).
We require a copy of the above page showing the effective dates, boat identification and the Protection and Indemnity section of your policy showing that all crew members are covered by the policy.

Am I charged for mechanical delays?

Yes, if the trip is delayed for repairs or maintenance, our daily rate will still be in effect. We will use this time to prepare for the next leg of the delivery.

Am I charged by the day or mile?

By the 24-hour day.

Do tools need to be on board?

Absolutely. Tools can make the difference between a one hour repair on the water, or a day's delay at a marina.

If the delivery is along the US East Coast, is the ICW (Intercoastal Waterway) used?

Yes. Experience has shown this is the best route. We go outside (open ocean) only with excellent weather forecasts, and if the vessel is running well. The ICW has good protection from the weather, and marinas and repair facilities are numerous and no more than a few hours away.

Does there need to be a life raft aboard?

Yes, and it must be recently inspected and tagged to that effect.

Are captain's travel expenses included in your rates?

No; you, the boat owner, will purchase transportation tickets from the captain’s locale to the boat, and his return from boat destination.

When do I pay for delivery services?

I will give you my best time estimate; then one half of estimated total is due upon agreement. At that time, a round trip transportation ticket must be reserved. The same applies for crew.

Do I pay you while you travel to and from my yacht?

The pay period ends when I wrap up the delivery and exit the yacht (at which point I'll call you). The pay period begins when I board the airplane or train to travel to your boat.
If you hire the crew, you dictate terms. If I hire crew, the same that applies to me applies to crew (though of course our daily pay rates differ - crew at $100 - $200).

Do you depart immediately upon arrival?

Yes, after provisioning and a basic checklist run- through, providing everything is in order. (see 'Delivery Checklist')

Is there a food cost per diem?

Yes. $25 per person/per day.

Do you or your crew smoke, drink alcohol, or take drugs?

No. I do not smoke, drink, or take illicit drugs, and will not hire or work with anyone who does. (I carry a Maritime Drug Consortium Card, always up to date and valid).

Do you need a small cash-reserve to travel with and/or a credit card?

Yes. A credit card and cash are best; however after provisioning and fuel, there may very well be no more costs.
